Job Description

JOB GOAL:

GENERAL JOB SUMMARY:
This position plays a key role in ensuring equal access to the educational opportunities for a student with a disability by providing accommodation support and assistance within the classroom environment. This position will join a team of individuals focused on advocacy, service and support of students with disabilities. The Reader/Scribe will work independently under the supervision of Accommodation Services to provide one on one support to a student in the classroom. The ideal individual has well-developed verbal skills and vocabulary, is a strong oral reader with a good command of the English language.

The work schedule for this position is Monday through Thursday from 9:00 am to 11:00 am. This position is a direct student support position and hours are subject to change with student's schedule.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Read class content directly to student
  • Record answers that are verbally dictated by student
  • Provide 1 on 1 support to a student in the classroom
Reader Responsibilities
  • Read assignments or tasks accurately to the student
  • Only read the instructions of the tasks at hand and must not explain or clarify questions
  • Describe visual elements of class content
  • May repeat the instructions of an assignment but only if the student requests to do so
  • May be asked to reread
Scribe Responsibilities:
  • Write accurately, and at a reasonable speed
  • Write a correction if requested to do so
  • Refer any problems in communication
  • Must not give the answer to the student or lead a student to an answer
  • At the student's request, repeat what has been recorded
  • May be asked to record notes, either handwritten or typed.

PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES WITH/WITHOUT REASONABLE ACCOMMODATION:

Position involves working in a classroom and/or lab setting. Occasional (10-33%) standing, pushing, pulling and grasping. Frequent (34-66%) reaching and viewing a computer and other types of close visual work. Constant (67-100%) sitting, walking, repetitive motion, talking and hearing.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High School Diploma
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS, LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS OR REGISTRATIONS:
  • Well-developed verbal and writing skills
  • Strong oral reader with a good command of the English language
  • Experience with individuals with disabilities
