DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: The work involves the assessment, planning,
implementation, evaluation and assignment of nursing care on a unit of the Erie County Medical Center Corporation (ECMCC). Supervision is received from a higher-ranking Registered Nurse or Physician. Supervision is exercised over nursing personnel assigned to the unit. Does related work as required.
TYPICAL WORK ACTIVITIES:
Makes rounds with physicians;
Schedules and assigns staff according to educational preparation and patient acuity;
Monitors the performance of unit staff to insure that the patient care plan is implemented; Monitors compliance of personnel with departmental and hospital policies and takes corrective action when necessary;
Insures that medical and nursing orders are implemented in a timely manner;
Assists with performance evaluation and progressive discipline involving staff on the unit; Conducts formal and informal educational programs for staff;
Orients new staff to their duties;
Monitors and utilizes supplies and equipment in a fiscally responsible manner; Participates in nursing committees;
Supervises all nursing activities on the units;
Serves as a clinical resource person, patient advocate, and clinical role model;
Performs tasks normally delegated to lower ranking nursing department employees, as required.
FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL
CHARACTERISTICS: Thorough knowledge of professional nursing techniques, principles,
and terminology; Good knowledge of hospital unit management; Working knowledge of
requirements of the New York State Health Department and JCAHO standards; Ability to
communicate effectively, both orally and in writing; Ability to establish and maintain effective
working relationships with a diverse constituency; Good interpersonal skills; Sound professional
judgment; Initiative; Resourcefulness; Industry; Dependability; capable of performing the
essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
- A) Possession of a Bachelor's degree in nursing, license and registration to practice as a
registered professional nurse in the State of New York, and one (1) year of professional nursing
experience; or:
- B) Graduation from an accredited school* of nursing, license and registration to practice as a
registered nurse in the State of New York, and two (2) years of professional nursing
experience; or:
- C) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) and (B).
NOTE: Candidates must possess at least one (1) year of experience in the specialty area to
which they are requesting assignment.
Specialty areas shall include:critical care, emergency nursing, medical/surgical, operating
room, hemodialysis, ambulatory care, post-anesthesia care unit (PACU), cardiac catheterization
laboratory and behavioral health.
